A Letter of Gratitude

By: Jennifer Rauch

It is almost a year to the date since I became a resident at MEI. The first time I came into the building, I was overwhelmed by how clean and warm it was, and how safe it made me feel. I had been homeless for over a year; I was depressed, scared, and hungry. Before my first interview, I sat in the foyer and I remember praying that I would get a room here that I wouldn't have to sleep outside anymore. My prayers were answered.

MEI has not only provided me with shelter, but a safe positive environment where I can heal. Since becoming a resident here, I've been able to successfully recover and become the strong, confident woman I once was. My case manager assisted me in getting nice clothes and household necessities for my room. She also gave me the confidence to apply for the LEAP program, which I am now enrolled in. I use the computers in the Business Center to help with my assignments. The food bank is a wonderful new addition to all the good things that make MEI so helpful.

In the past year, I achieved many goals which seemed impossible just months before. I am an active member at the local YMCA and came in first place in their Fitlinxx program, two months in a row. I also won a month long fitness challenge. I volunteer once a week at the San Francisco Zoo. I am thoroughly enjoying the LEAP program and I'm looking forward to becoming employed. I hope to take a few classes at City College and work towards my Bachelors in Science. I am an active participant in the community with a new confidence, stemming in part from a safe home environment.

I'd also like to mention all the friendships that I have made here at MEI. There is a feeling of kinship. We all have our own stories, our own struggles to overcome and MEI brings us together so that we don't have to take those difficult steps alone.
